If there's one thing I love in a home, it's an aged/distressed look. I am a huge fan of Southern Living magazine, and I love to get ideas from there. If my whole home could look like the homes in the magazines, I would be so happy, but unfortunately, those styles don't work in all homes. If there are two things that aren't "Southern" in a home, it's generally white paint, and honey oak. Yuck! While Addison was at my parents' house, I decided that I HAD to take the opportunity to sand and restain our banisters. Now, not only do we have one on one side, but we have another banister on the other side, as well as two "rails" at the top of the stairs. This meant a lot of sanding, a lot of staining, and then a lot of staining again. I have yet to put the polyurethane on them since they are still drying, but had to take a picture because they look so awesome!
I will admit, they look so much cooler in person. They are not a solid stained color, since that isn't my style or the look I was going for, which meant it took me even longer to get them just right. From staining, to darkening some areas, and rubbing off the stain on others, I definitely learned the art of staining, and am amazed that it actually didn't take me very long! And while all of my paint colors in my home are on the National Trust Prehistoric Colors, I know very well that Lyndhurst Stone is not exactly giving my home a 'Southern' vibe...
